What Does the Evidence Say About Doula Support During Birth?

Labor can be exciting, intense, unpredictable, and sometimes all three within a few minutes. You may have a wonderful partner and a caring medical team and still appreciate someone who can stay close, offer comfort, and help you find your footing as things change. That’s what a birth doula is there to do.

There is research behind this kind of support, too. A large review of studies found that people who had continuous support during labor were, on average, more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth and less likely to have a cesarean birth or feel negatively about their birth experience. That doesn’t mean a doula can guarantee how a birth will go. It means that having someone consistently by your side can make a meaningful difference.

I believe good support makes room for your birth, whether that includes an epidural, an induction, a cesarean, or a change of plans you never expected. As your doula, I work alongside your partner and medical team, help you stay connected to your preferences, and offer a steady presence through it all.
